Thimotheus Vermeleun

Thimotheus Vermeulen is a professor of media, culture, and society at the University of Oslo, Norway, and a visiting scholar in the history of art and architecture at Harvard University, USA. He holds a PhD in Film and TV Studies from the University of Reading (AHRC funded), an MA in Film and TV Studies from the University of Warwick (funded by the Prins Bernhard Foundation and VSB Fund), an MA in Media Studies, and an MA in Philosophy from Erasmus University Rotterdam, as well as a BA in History from the same institution.

Vermeulen's research interests are in the fields of screen studies and critical and cultural theory, although he often engages with art. He has published five books, with two more in progress, and nearly a hundred articles in peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, magazines, and catalogues. His research has been translated into over ten languages and cited more than 2000 times. In 2013, his collaborative research with Robin van den Akker and Alison Gibbons was highlighted in a special issue of The American Book Review.

Along with Linda Ceriello, Vermeulen oversees the Studies in Metamodernism book series, is a co-founder of the now-defunct webzine Notes on Metamodernism, and is a regular contributor to frieze. He also co-hosts The Cluster F Theory Podcast with Gia Milinovich.

Vermeulen's work has gained international attention, being discussed in major media outlets worldwide. He is a sought-after public speaker, having presented at various prestigious venues globally. In his academic role, he teaches and supervises students across screen studies and critical and cultural theory, offering courses on a variety of topics.
